To anyone interested in commanding a unit or two and seeing how BFAS plays.

Goodday Mr Pooley
Noticed you and a few other gents have been playing BFaS.
I have just ordered a copy from the UK (might arrive before xmas) and was wondering if you could give me an insight to the rules/or direct me to someone who can. e.g number of minis to use, scale etc.
many thanks
Regards Mick

hi mick,

We're using our DBR/FOG:R 15s armies. F&S has 3 scales - 2 that come in the book: skirmish (hand full of units, what you get in one of their boxes for a minimum game) which is similar to 500 point FOW or 40K kill team scale; and division where an army has 1-3 Formations (which will be of a particular regimental type: cavalry, elite cav, infantry, dragoons, etc.).

A small divisional battle pretty much maxes out a tournament scale DBR or FOG:R list (~40 bases) so you really need a lot of miniatures to get the most out of the divisional and regimental list building format (which is similar to FOW). Because of the period, cavalry is a big thing.

System has hierarchical command and control, command point resource management (can be used for more than Orders), vicious 2 step melee, lots of national rules, and stratagems that really let games get beyond the even-steven set em up tournament scene.

Its a big rule book, the mechanics are simple, yet spread over a lot of page and I would have preferred plain text for rules and italics for examples (and no red text at all) instead of the other way around which they have followed.

And of course the Poles rule.
