The rulebook says 40mm square. Have people been following that? I'm not sure but do we tend to put CC on larger bases (60mm)?

All commanders need to be on a 40mm base - personally I can't see much difference whether it is square or round.
Using a larger size is a little unfair unless everyone does the same. A larger base means you influence a larger area for CMT and recovery rolls.

Yeah I agree. It's just in my vague recollection that I've seen larger bases. I could be wrong though.

That may be because people are carrying their collections across from other Napoleonic systems now lost to the mists of time. Re-basing is time consuming and can damage painted miniatures sometimes, so no one is likely to call anyone on their slightly-too-large commander bases. But if you're painting new troops, best to base them correctly.

My older based figures have Corps commanders on 50mm x 50mm bases.

It looks better to hold more stuff, but any bigger could cause the issue the Steve mentions.
