Is anyone able to give me a practice game at the League meeting in January?

Yes for an afternoon game. Haven't played DBR for years though. Looking at the Cancon website it says there are a bunch of special rules... without saying what they are so I assume you will sort that out for me.

Thanks Django, I've got a game with Chris Pooley in the morning. So a game in the afternoon will be great. I'll e-mail you the "special" rules.

Regards, Lyle

It's been so long that I can't find any of my DBR books. If you could bring the book Scots Covenantors are in I could sort out a list on the day. I vaguely recall what I used to run so it shouldn't take too long to sort out.

All hail Chris Pooley, the new Australian and South Pacific Champion at DBR! Local rule changes and foreign opposition cannot stop him. After last year's Kiwi domination, yet another League of Ancients player is successful on Australia Day. Chris now joins his brother Damian, Mark Robins (9 times champion), Jonathan Moore (3 times champion), Paul Garnham and myself as winners of the Cancon DBR event.

Interesting. Whoever was running it never says his own name in the article and includes himself in the draw to win his own tournament even though there is already an even number of players without him.

That annoyed me immensely too, so I went back to the Cancon site:

Event was apparently run by Ian Nicoll.

Can any of our Cancon FOGR players give any insight into what happened there?

I watched a lot of this FoGR event. I will leave it to Richard, Nick or Michael Gray to write a more comprehensive response, but I think people are being more than a little unfair to Ian Nicoll. Cancon DBR has had player-referees for years, and although I often hated their sometimes quite silly and always unnecessary rule changes, I never doubted their integrity.

cheers
Mark

The reason why we accept the DBR playing umpires is that we know that they never win!!

Oh, I thought the reason was that no one else wanted to referee and people preferred to play.... Gosh maybe that's exactly the same thing for FoGR?

For whatever reason, be it Gush, DBR or FoGR, the Renaissance period has always been a select boutique period for wargamers. If your options are not to have an event at all or to have a relaxed event with a player-referee, then unless you are out for notional sheep stations, the rational choice is obvious.

If Ian Nicholl was on some ego trip he would not have run Samurai, so come on guys, let's get real! He at least was prepared to man up and face playing Richard Stubbs, Michael Gray and Nick Wade...

cheers
Mark
