About to start painting a kiels worth of these guys, and I have a question.
Some of them are wearing what I thought was a chain mail shoulder protection, but none of the pictures I have seen show landscknects with mail, only plate. Could they possibly be fur? Or is it mail after all?
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

And no, the subject does not have anything to do with irate Germans!!

Remembering that some of these were used in Northern and Eastern Europe, I've done those landsknechts as wearing chainmail (less fashionable than the Italian and French serving ones).

There seems to be evidence it was used:

I Googled landscknect armour, never thought to try landscknect chain mail!
Thanks for that von Lucky. I had sort of decided along those lines in any case.

(Following on from our conversation yesterday), I recommend painting the clothing (either stripes on the pants and/or tops and bottoms) in contrastng colours (including dull colours like black and tan for a few). And yes, I painted all shirt sleeves white - saves a hell of a lot of time.

Yes, a little bit of "less is more" rather than an unrestrained explosion of colour.
And something as small as the white sleeves works to bring a cohesion to the unit, even when there is so much (restrained!) colour.
