So, it occurs to me that the next League meeting just happens to fall on Trafalgar day. The 207th anniversary of the battle in fact. The natural response is of course to play some Trafalgar! Anyone keen?

Hmm, I'd definitely be interested but it's likely that I'll trying to desperately learn FoG AM for the upcoming tournament next meeting.

Am keen to push some ships around. Thoughts on scenario?

Will post a list of what I've got in stock (we're talking 1/1200, right?).

I reckon I could be persuaded to join in.

I'm interested - would also give me impetus to read my Trafalgar rules, which sit gathering dust on a shelf somewhere...

If we are playing 1/1200, I have french ships:

L'Orient (could play it as a spanish 3/4 decker)

2x 80gun ships of the line

3x 40gun frigates

1 cutter (use for british?)

---

If there were enough of us, could we do Battle of Trafalgar? Approx 60 ships of the line altogether?

Actually doing the Battle of Trafalgar as a big multi-player game would be fantastic, even if we had to reduce numbers slightly for playability or due to a lack of miniatures. I like your thinking, Ara.

Unfortunately, I can only offer a few British Frigates, as I haven't been painting much for Trafalgar (I find it much easier to paint miniatures for games that I'm playing, and I haven't played Trafalgar in ages due to that never-to-be-sufficiently-cursed period when I was working Sundays and couldn't get to the League).

So, as was suggested, can we get a list of 1/1200 ships from people that would like to play, or if you can't play but would be willing to lend miniatures to the cause?

1 1st rate
4 3rd rate
1 3rd rate (small)
2 frigates
1 brig

Ahoy!

I have 4 each of French, Spanish and British, each ranging from 4th to 1st rate if I recollect. Stubbsy and I have our nice sea tables too [Gollum like "Precious" sound effects please].

Count me in as Franco-Spanish!

cheers
Mark

While Trafalgar is nice, I see it having the possibility of getting out of hand with most of us (myself included) not being familiar with the rules.

Something smaller, where each person controls 3-5 ships might be a better option. Some suggestions:

Battle of Groix
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Groix

Battle of Cape Finisterre (1805)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cape_Finisterre_%281805%29

Battle of Tory Island
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Tory_Island

Thoughts?

Bugger , this sounds awesome . Unfortunatley I will be riding my legs off Around the Bay ( well 135 k of it ) Sad

Still

I have French and British fleets you can use .

Mark's right we have 2 beautiful 6 x 4 seascapes .

With enough players , you'd probably command only 4 or so ships .

The rules aren't that tricky .

I'll read up on the scenario and see how much you need . Wink

Should probably point out all my stuff is unpainted - so if you're working on a scenario let me know what you need and I'll try and finish it off.

Had a read of the Battle of Trafalgar scenario in the book. It's a relatively simple scenario, there's just a heap of ships to include. I'm thinking... I could just scan the relevant pages (inside front cover for ship displacements; scenario rules; oob for fleets/ships including relative rules for each ship) and then put the images up on here. Given Warhammer Historical no longer exists, and TRafalgar is out of print, I don't see any IP problems. What say our resident lawyers/IP-paladins? Wink

Von Lucky, get as many ships painted as possible! Only need ships of the line, apparently, as the frigates held back during the battle and weren't involved. I might field my frigates as 3rd rate ships, just to make up the numbers, if they're needed.

...now I just to read the rules, at some point. Or can I rely on someone to just tell me what to do, when we play? Smile

Yep - plan on concentrating on the x4 74-gun, x3 66-gun and the x2 100-gun ships of the line.

Not sure whether Games Workshop would get all lawyer on us about publicly reproducing pages from their no-longer-in-print book. It's not hard to get a ship list for one of the most famous naval battles in history, though. This blatantly stolen from Wikipedia after a 40 second search (because I'm precisely that diligent):

British
3 First Rates
4 Second Rates
20 Third Rates
6 Other Ships

Franco-Spanish
4 First Rates
0 Second Rates
29 Third Rates
7 Other Ships

So the question is, do we have enough miniatures to approach that? What if we, and don't lynch me for this, but what if we halved the numbers, to get a 'representative' game?
